Abstract
Science and the development of the engineering industry are the foundation of every
country’s development. All countries face a shortage of STEM staff in science, technology,
engineering and mathematics. Young people should therefore be encouraged to continue their
education in these areas. One way is to introduce STEM classes in primary and secondary
schools. Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) has joined and, together with foreign governmental and
non-governmental organizations, launched the ENABLE-BIH project aimed at strengthening the
STEM area in teaching and education. The research for the purposes of this paper was conducted
at the 9th Primary School in the Brcko District of BiH, which is a participant in this project. The
existence of a difference in the students’ attitudes about STEM classes was investigated in relation
to the way they attended classes, whether it was classroom or subject teaching. 4 variables were
used which were grouped by factor analysis. The analysis included 117 students who completed
the survey, over 80 percent of students in total. The results showed that the variable concerning
the value of STEM classes was the only one that displayed a significant statistical difference
between the assessments of students attending class teaching and the students attending subject
teaching. The results of the research will help in the further development of STEM education in
Bosnia and Herzegovina, as the research provides a basis for understanding students’ acceptance
of STEM in teaching.
