Abstract
Important determiners of the quality of educational institution are the teachers and the quality of their work assignments. The requirements
imposed on teachers in the 21st century are becoming more versatile and demand a wide range of skills in different areas of work. By reviewing
and analyzing available literature the aim of this paper is to give insight in current knowledge about the competencies of teachers, to point to
its importance, to unite and demonstrate the results of research whose authors dealt with the competencies of teachers and to try to give
a theoretical and critical analysis with a special focus on pedagogical competencies. Reviewing the literature that deals with the problem of
teacher competencies, we tried to point to their importance, to develop theoretical basis and to analyze the research done so far in order to answer
different research questions. The study of pedagogical competencies shows that pedagogical competencies are in the focus of interest of
pedagogues, while the analysis shows the specificity in every particular research and can be used in future operationalizations of pedagogical
competencies. The competence of teachers is seen as a prerequisite of sustainable development on which the future perspective of educational practice is dependent on, and the paper gives modest contribution to making the problem more known.
