Abstract

During my research on the Croatian translations of Goldoni’s comedies, which began approximately fifteen years ago and was collected into a book and published by Leykam in 2013, Pregovori s izvornikom: O hrvatskim prijevodima Goldonijevih komedija (‘Negotiating the Source Text: On the Croatian Translations of Goldoni’s Comedies’), of the five different works studied, I found the Croatian translations and adaptations of the comedy La bottega del caffè the most varied and interesting from the linguistic, stylistic, as well as translational point of view. In the
meantime, a new adaptation has been staged at the Zagreb Comedy Theatre in 2014, adapted and directed by Damir Lončar. As we commemorate the 230th anniversary of Goldoni’s death this year, the intention of the paper was to mark it with a new analysis by applying the same research tools I had used before, in order to re-evaluate and/or reconfirm some of the previous conclusions, and determine whether the paradigms of the previous stagings and adaptations have changed with this new adaptation. Lončar’s adaptation was compared with Goldoni’s original and an older, very famous adaptation by Frano Čale in 1978. In such a comparison, Lončar’s version shows greater linguistic variety, with every character speaking a different idiolect, geographically corroborated
and totally different from the original setting of the comedy, which was reformist, universalist and written in standard Italian. However, it seems that the choice to localize the language and the environment has a major effect on the audience when the comedy is staged and is a plausible translation strategy, and that we can expect to see more of such translational and theatrical procedures in the future.
