Abstract
This paper (based on Vuletić’s MA thesis and expanded herein) presents a stylistic
analysis of two plays recently performed at the Croatian National Theatre in
Split, Ol’ smo za jedan dan (on the repertoire since 2010) and Smij i suze starega
Splita (on the repertoire since 2017). The methodological approach comprises tools
from vernacular stylistics and drama discourse stylistics. Both of these stylistic
subdisciplines have been underrepresented in stylistic research in Croatia to date.
Likewise, literary studies of vernacular texts have yet to be performed. Our stylistic
analysis of the vernacular texts of plays (scripts) of the two dramas focuses on the
typical elements of the drama discourse (dialogues, monologues, didaskalia); on
microstructural elements (sayings, curses, idioms, comparisons); and some Splitspecific cultural topoi (insults). The aim of this paper is to contribute to the research in both the stylistics, and in the literary studies of vernacular texts – through working at their intersection – the vernacular stylistics. Also, this paper looks at the language-stylistic, dialectological, and cultural characteristics of the Split vernacular as it appears in the two plays.
