Organic production of sheep meat in the Republic of Croatia

Sažetak

Sheep rearing is a branch of animal husbandry associated with raising sheep for their fibre, milk and meat, whereby meat production represents the most significant segment. The fact that the consumption of sheep meat (2.1 kg per capita) at the EU level is higher than its production means that the EU has not achieved self-sufficiency and must therefore meet the needs of the population by importing sheep meat from other Member States and other countries (especially New Zealand and Argentina), all the while respecting a complex legislative procedure. A similar trend has also emerged in the Republic of Croatia where total consumption (1.6 kg per capita) is nearly three times higher than due production of sheep meat and where the needs of the population are also met by importing sheep meat from abroad. Croatia’s entry into full EU membership has provided farmers with the opportunity to export sheep meat on the internal market, where high quality and organic sheep meat are “in great demand”. In order to achieve desired business results and achieve competitiveness, Croatian manufacturers must intensify promotional activities, strategically brand their products (primarily Pag and Brač lamb) and thus make their products more recognizable and desirable for demanding customers on both European and global market.
