Sažetak

Stroke is one of the leading causes of disability and mortality in the world. Primary and secondary stroke prevention is focused on treating stroke risk factors. According to the Interstroke study, ten modifying risk factors responsible for 90% of stroke are: arterial hypertension, physical inactivity, inappropriate diet, obesity, smoking, hyperlipidemia, heart disease, alcohol consumption, stress and diabetes. Antithrombotic agents, especially acetylsalicylic acid in secondary stroke prevention, have an important role in the stroke prevention. The use of oral anticoagulants significantly reduces the risk of ischemic stroke in persons with atrial fibrillation. The results of the recent researches question the use of acetylsalicylic acid in primary stroke prevention primarily due to higher incidence of hemorrhagic complications without statistically evident differences in cardiovascular outcome.
