Sažetak

In oral presentations in the academic setting, presenting a research problem using a rhetorical desyouka question has been proven effective. However, previous teaching manuals lack an explicit discussion and instruction on this form of questioning. After providing an overview on how desyouka questions have been dealt with in teaching Japanese as a foreign language this study elucidates its actual use through the Corpus of Spontaneous Japanese. In addition, the question formulation technique was introduced in a class for advanced learners of Japanese, after which they were guided to rewrite questions using desyouka and were instructed to present their research. The result indicates that a number learners was able to ask questions using rhetorical desyouka questions in their oral presentations. Therefore, this study suggests that providing explicit instructions on asking questions using desyouka for presenting a research problem may contribute to the improvement of oral presentation skills of Japanese language learners.
