Sacred Space Through History: The Fundamental Theological Elements and Essential Content of Liturgical Space

Sažetak
In this article the author analyzes the dynamics of sacred space and art in churches
throughout history and also today from a theological–liturgical and cultural–
historical perspective. The first part presents an articulation of „models“ of church
space, highlighting their theological, stylistic and cultural foundations in accordance with historical epochs. The second part of the article is dedicated to the consideration
of the fundamental theological determinants of worship space — christological,
ecclesiological and liturgical — the basis of which is the teaching of the Council
contained in the Constitution „Sacrosanctum Concilium“. The third part presents
and discusses the question of works of art for liturgical space. The aim is the search
for harmony between art and architecture in the service of the liturgy which opens
the space for the active participation of the faithful and the articulation of liturgical
celebration which fully manifests and accomplishes the encounter and communion
between Christ and His Church.
