Rječnik hrvatsko-talijanski (Croatian–Italian Dictionary) by the prominent Croatian lexicographer, linguist, Glagolitic scholar, and photographer Dragutin Antun Parčić (Vrbnik, 1832 – Rome, 1902), published in Zadar in 1901, is one of the most important sources for the knowledge and study of the Croatian language. Written in a moderately derivational orthography, this dictionary provides guidelines for the development of the Croatian language and spelling in harmony with the developed cultures of the Western European sphere, including the Slavic one. It contains around 90,000 words, many of which have already fallen into oblivion today. Parčić opposed the principle “write as you speak,” which he considered unclear and unstable. His principle was “write for the eye, and speak for the ear,” which is why he was close to the Zagreb Philological School. This dictionary is the result of his forty years of arduous work. To this day (i.e., until 2019), the dictionary has not yet been fully treated in a comprehensive monographic study. Although two doctoral dissertations have already been published on Parčić’s versatile work in other fields (one in the area of Croatian grammar and another on the language of Parčić’s Glagolitic missal from 1893), there is still not a single dissertation devoted to his monumental Croatian–Italian dictionary. There are individual articles that address this dictionary from the perspectives of narrower disciplines, for example from the viewpoints of philology, botany, and maritime studies. Radoslav Katičić says of Parčić’s dictionary that it “opens fundamental questions which, for nearly a hundred years now, have been continually pushed aside from the agenda of linguistic debate and removed from the horizon of linguistic culture; it documents a neglected fullness of Croatian linguistic expressiveness and confirms a neglected history.” According to Zlatko Vince, “Parčić’s contribution to Croatian lexicography still awaits proper evaluation.” Igor Gostl holds a similar view: “Despite all its lexical richness and stylistic diversity, Parčić’s lexicographic work was not sufficiently studied and therefore remained insufficiently known in Slavic, and especially Croatian, scholarly circles. The reasons for the neglect of this Croatian lexicographic heritage are extralinguistic, that is, political in nature, and are closely connected with the preference for and promotion of the Croatian Vukovian linguistic tradition, in the name of the unifying ideology of Yugoslavism. Despite the entirety of his opus and its importance, Parčić’s contribution remains, unfortunately, insufficiently researched and evaluated even today.”
