Sažetak
Although the prose Latin work by Antun Rozanović (Antonius Rosaneus, 1524 – 1580), a native of Korčula, in which he describes the heroic defense of his hometown against an Ottoman attack in 1571, has been published twice in Croatian translation, the original Latin text has not yet been properly edited, nor has it ever been published in print. The work is preserved in a large number of manuscript witnesses dating from the sixteenth to the nineteenth century, of which only a few have attracted the attention of scholars. This article provides the first comprehensive overview of the manuscript tradition of Rozanović’s work, based on the direct study of all the surviving witnesses that the authors have identified and were allowed to access. The central contribution of the article is the identification of Rozanović’s autograph transcript of The Defense of Korčula, now kept in the Museum of Hvar Heritage in Hvar (Muzej hvarske baštine), together with several previously completely unknown Latin poems by Rozanović.
The identification was made possible by an extensive search through various archival repositories in Croatia and abroad. Rozanović’s autograph transcript of his major Latin work is here situated within the overall manuscript tradition, with special attention paid to the reconstruction of this tradition from the sixteenth to the nineteenth century. It is argued that the manuscript tradition was crucially affected early on by the interventions of the author’s brother Vice Rozanović and the author’s nephew Ivan Krstitelj Rozanović. While the autograph is given a privileged place in the discussion, considerable attention is also devoted to the later manuscript reception of Rozanović’s works, which shows that interest in Rozanović’s Defense of Korčula reached its peak in the eighteenth century, partly thanks to the work of Filippo Riceputi, the initiator of the monumental historiographical undertaking known as Illyricum sacrum. By taking special account of those who made the manuscript tradition of Rozanović’s works possible through their copying, collecting, and antiquarian work, the article aims to offer a different, more productive model for approaching Korčula’s historical record, especially in its various manuscript forms.
