Sažetak

This article examines the historical novels of Roman Ivanychuk, focusing on the portrayal of intellectual protagonists—artists, scholars, and public figures—who, across different epochs (from the 13th to the 20th century), endured profound historical upheavals yet sought to preserve both their individual and national identity while fulfilling their cultural mission. The study addresses the recurring conflict between the artist and representatives of authority, highlights the various forms of intellectual engagement in social and political processes, and underscores the persistent doubts of artists and scholars regarding the correctness of their chosen path. Furthermore, Ivanychuk’s intellectual heroes reflect on the moral admissibility of compromise with one’s conscience, as well as on the legitimacy of withdrawal from social activity under the conditions of existential and historical challenges faced by their people in a given era.
