Sažetak

Tolerance represents one of the fundamental social and educational values, particularly in the context of contemporary multicultural communities and migration processes. Children’s and young adult departments of public libraries, as open and inclusive spaces for informal learning, have significant potential in fostering tolerant behavior, empathy, and intercultural understanding. This paper analyses workshops (Virtual Journeys, Through Journeys to Knowledge, Cultural Weeks, So What!?, koloRplet, Bookland – Superhero Hlapić) implemented within long-term projects of the Children’s and Young Adult Department of the Dugave Library: Discovering Young Talents (since 2002), Cronauts (since 2010), Key to Knowledge (since 2011), and Virtual Measures (since 2020). The latter project was initiated in response to the COVID-19 pandemic and the temporary closure of libraries, with the aim of ensuring continuity of services via digital platforms. Project included online exhibitions, digital publications, thematic presentations, as well as the integration and accessibility of previously developed online content. These projects are carried out continuously through annual cycles of literary, visual-creative, intercultural, and problem-based workshops aimed at developing social and civic competences. Over the years, several hundred primary and secondary school students have participated in the programmes, implemented in cooperation with schools, associations, and cultural institutions. The analysis shows that combining library materials, creative work, experiential learning, digital tools, and inter-institutional collaboration contributes to the development of social cohesion, the integration of migrant children, and the strengthening of socially responsible and humanistic values within the local community.
