Labeling of foodstuffs with reference to meat products

Sažetak

After the Republic of Croatia joined the European Union, Regulation (EU) No. 1169/2011 on the provision of information to consumers began to apply at the end of 2014, and during the past ten years of its application, significant changes have occurred in the field of labelling of prepackaged food products. Uniformity and transparency of the declaration for different types of food has been achieved, including for meat products, thus guaranteeing consumers the right to information about the food they consume. The results of the declarations of meat products inspected by the Croatian Veterinary Institute during the period from 2017 to 2023 show that producers have generally applied all the provisions relating to the labelling of meat products. Over the years of application of the aforementioned Regulation, a trend of a significant decrease in the number of non-compliances in the labeling of pre-packaged meat products has been observed, from 2017, when 40% of non-compliant labeled products were found, to 2023, when 7% were found to be non-compliant. Correct labeling of foodstuffs is of great importance for the protection of human health, that is, for their safety, primarily in the case of hypersensitive populations and populations suffering from chronic diseases, and also for ensuring consumer rights.
